McArthur: Ram’s the man

JAMES McArthur admits Wigan Athletic were lucky to land Ivan Ramis after the centre-back rubbed West Ham’s noses in it for the second time this season.

Ramis joined Latics from Real Mallorca in the summer, turning down advances from the Hammers to move to the North West. The big centre-back scored his first goal for Latics in their Capital One Cup victory at Upton Park last month.

And he rubbed more salt into West Ham wounds with the opener in Saturday’s 2-1 victory at the DW.

“I know the reason why West Ham wanted him because he’s a good football player – it’s good that we got him,” said McArthur.

“He suits our style of play. He can win challenges, he’s good in the air, but when he gets on the ball, he’s got real quality.”

McArthur wasn’t the only one left open-mouthed after Ramis met Jean Beausejour’s corner on the volley to break the deadlock in dramatic fashion.

“We were all saying in the dressing room what an outstanding finish it was,” McArthur gushed.

“He couldn’t have hit it any better and it was a great goal.

“He’s a great character around the dressing room. He’s got a great sense of humour, he’s a fun lad.”

The victory was Wigan’s first at home all season after two draws and two defeats, and McArthur hopes it will be the first of many.

“It was great to get our first home win,” he added. “We’ve been playing well enough and just haven’t been getting that wee bit of luck.

“Today we got that luck and I thought we were unlucky to concede a goal at the end, which was disappointing. But we got the three points, which we wanted.

“Our run at home hadn’t stopped us from playing – we’ve still been playing with confidence.

“Hopefully we can kick on now, because we need to try and push up the table.”
