DAVE Whelan hopes the offer of a new contract will be enough to persuade Roberto Martinez to carry on as Wigan Athletic’s boss.

And the chairman’s gut feeling is that Martinez will turn his back on offers elsewhere and stay on to mastermind Wigan’s promotion push next term.

Whelan will use every bit of his powers of persuasion when the pair meet this afternoon to discuss the Spaniard’s future.

Martinez has been strongly linked with vacant managerial positions at Everton, Stoke and Malaga since Wigan’s relegation from the top flight.

But Whelan has not given up hope of Martinez staying put.

“I’ll never give up hope of keeping Roberto, and my gut feeling is that he will stay with Wigan Athletic,” Whelan told the Evening Post.

“He has one year left on his contract, and I would like him to extend it by another two years.

“I’ve already had a very constructive meeting with Roberto. He was very honest, as always, and put his cards on the table.

“He’s got certain things to think about, which I respect. It’s not a straightforward yes or no.

“He wants 24 hours to talk to his wife and we’ll meet again on Thursday.

“If he says he wants to leave, I won’t refuse. But I hope he says he wants to stay here.”
