WIGAN Athletic goalkeeper Lee Nicholls has joined Bristol Rovers on a 93-day loan deal.
The stopper has struggled for game time at Latics and is currently third choice at the DW Stadium behind Richard O’Donnell and Jussi Jaaskelainen.
It’s the sixth time the 22-year-old has left on loan but the first since relegation from the Premier League.
His most successful spell came during the 2012/13 season when he played 46 times for Northampton Town as they reached the play-off final.
He’s also spent time at Hartlepool, Shrewsbury, Sheffield Wednesday and Accrington Stanley.
Despite the move, Gary Caldwell says Noicholls still has a big future at Wigan Athletic.
“Lee is still a big part of our plans here, so much so that he played an equal share of the pre-season games with Richard O’Donnell,” he said.
“He’s still a very good young goalkeeper and we feel at this time it is essential for him to be playing games to continue his development and, with Jussi Jaaskelainen on board, we have the opportunity to send Lee to Bristol Rovers where hopefully he will do just that.
“Lee progressed immensely during his time at Northampton Town two years ago and we hope to see the same benefits from this move for him.”
