A MAJESTIC first-half performance laid the platform for Latics to move one step near Wembley with a Capital One Cup victory over Forest.

This tie had been selected by many as the most likely to provide an upset, with the Sky cameras in town for the occasion.

But the nation were merely served up a feast of fantastic football by a Wigan side who were out of sight by the interval.

Mauro Boselli scored the opener - his first Latics goal for nearly two years, both in this competition - after Latics had withstood an early onslaught from Forest.

And two world-class goals in quick succession before the interval emphasised the gulf in class between Premier League and Championship.

First Maynor Figueroa lashed in a beauty from 30 yards, which was matched shortly after by Jordi Gomez’s right-footed cracker.

Forest pulled one back at the start of the second period through Simon Cox’s rocket from distance.

But Latics overcame the needless sending-off of Antolin Alcaraz for two quickfire bookings to secure their safe passage thanks to Callum McManaman’s last-minute goal.
