Paul Cook: I couldn't single out a star player for Wigan Athletic

Paul Cook admits his first season at Wigan Athletic went so well he found it impossible to select a player of the season.

While right-back Nathan Byrne won the award as voted by the players and the fans, several other players – including Sam Morsy, Dan Burn, Will Grigg, Nick Powell and Chey Dunkley – had solid claims.

And Cook is glad he wasn’t asked to come up with a name for his top dog.

“I genuinely couldn’t pick any one of them,” he said.

“For me as a manager, the important thing for me at the start of the season is everyone having a part to play.

“For some players that will be smaller than others, but they could all end up as important as each other.

“You go back to our big wins this year...for example Rochdale at home – we made seven changes. Away from home, the 1-0 win at Bradford, we made a lot of changes again.

“All season the lads have done an outstanding job, breaking records at both ends of the field.

“The middle areas are strong too – in my opinion we’ve got the outstanding central midfield in the division, bar none.

“Right through the team, we’ve been littered with quality individual performances.

“And I’m sure the Wigan fans will all have their own idea as to who they’d pick.

“It says something about how well we’ve played this year when 10 different fans could pick five or six different players for the award. I’ll sit back as manager and enjoy the success of the group.”
