JASON Pearce insists Wigan Athletic will ‘stand up and be counted’ when the new season gets under way.

The big season-opener at Coventry is little over a fortnight away, with Latics being hotly-tipped to make a quick return to the Championship.

But Pearce , who is battling to be fit due to a leg injury, says Latics are determined to do all their talking on the field this time round.

“Whether we’re the favourites for promotion or not, we’ve just got to concentrate on the job in hand,” he said. “Obviously there are going to be a lot of clubs that want to come here, to this nice stadium, and beat us.

“But we have to make sure we stand up to be counted, and make sure that doesn’t happen.

“We’re desperate top bring some success to this club, after what happened last season. We feel we belong in the Championship to start with.

“But you can talk all day long about what you feel you deserve. It’s about doing it on the pitch and that’s what we aim to do.”
