ORIOL Riera is back in the Wigan Athletic squad for tomorrow’s massive six-pointer against Rotherham.
The Spanish striker missed last weekend’s trip to Watford through injury, but he is in contention for a game Latics simply must win.
Riera’s only goal in a Wigan shirt came in the 1-0 win over Blackpool back in August.
And with only the Seasiders now below Latics in the standings, three points against fourth-bottom Rotherham would be the perfect early Christmas present for boss Malky Mackay, who also revealed good news regarding Shaun Maloney.
“Shaun is a week further on in terms of where he was last weekend with the virus, which can only be good,” said Mackay. “The more players I have strong, fit, healthy the better.
“There have been a few sniffs and colds this week, but everybody seems to be coming back from that.
“I don’t think that’s any different from anywhere else in the country at the moment.
“Overall it’s been a reasonably good week’s training, and we’re in good shape for Saturday.”
Mackay also revealed Martyn Waghorn is “a couple of weeks” away from a return from a shoulder problem, although he has started light training with the rest of the squad.
