OWEN Coyle is keeping his fingers crossed that Thomas Rogne’s rotten luck with injuries hasn’t ruled him out of the big kick-off next weekend.
Latics concluded their pre-season preparations with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Dundee United on Saturday.
The home side were left to rue a host of missed chances as they suffered their first defeat under Coyle’s stewardship just a week before the Championship campaign gets underway at Barnsley.
But the back injury sustained midway through the first half by Rogne - making his Latics debut after a calf problem dogged him earlier in the summer - was by far the most worrying development.
“It looked like Thomas took a knock in the back, and then landed on the same spot which made it worse,” said Coyle, who was generally pleased with Wigan’s performance if not their end product.
“We think it’s some kind of back spasm, which will hopefully ease in the next few days and we’ll see how he is.
“I’m certainly not ruling him out for Barnsley, but obviously he would have to step it up later in the week.
“Ideally we would have liked him to have got at least half a game under his belt, but that wasn’t to be.”
