Ryan feeling less than mighty thanks to illness

Ryan Colclough will once again be absent from the Wigan Athletic squad travelling down to Wimbledon for this weekend's League One encounter.

The Latics winger has largely fallen off the radar in recent weeks after making worldwide headlines during the 3-0 victory over Doncaster a month ago, when he was substituted moments after scoring his second goal, in time to see his partner give birth.

Colclough has been sidelined with a bug that is requiring ‘heavy’ medication, and he has been quarantined from the rest of the squad as a precaution.

“Ryan doesn’t make the trip, he’s not been well,” revealed Latics manager Paul Cook.

“It’s the second weekend on the run he’s had a very high temperature, and a couple of issues surrounding that.

“He felt rough the other week at Fylde, and he hasn’t been able to play since then.

“He’s on a heavy dose of anti-biotics and he’ll stay at home this weekend.”

It’s the latest blow in a season of frustration for Colclough, who served a three-match ban after being sent off for swearing at an official following the 1-0 loss at Shrewsbury in early September, before breaking his hand later in the month after scoring in the 3-2 defeat at Peterborough.

“It’s so disappointing for him, because it’s been a little bit stop-start for him this season,” acknowledged Cook.

“There’s nothing you can do sometimes – you just have to get on with it.

“For players in general, the more momentum you can get, the better it can be.

“Certainly for Ryan, he’s been unable to generate that momentum for various reasons.

“That’s football, but he’s in the best place now for him to get better.”
