FRANCO Di Santo was the hero for Latics, popping up in injury time to nick three valuable points and banish the memories of last weekend’s daylight robbery against Blackburn.
With the Black Cats throwing men forward in search of a winner it was Di Santo who struck when Keiron Westwood and Wes Brown gifted the ball to James McArthur, who fed Di Santo to tap home.
Wigan had gone behind after eight minutes when Sebastian Larsson struck after Ali Al Habsi spilled the ball into his path following a shot from Niklas Bendtner.
But they equalised on half time when Victor Moses was felled in the box and Jordi Gomez rattled in the penalty.
