JAMES Tavernier admits first-team spots are well and truly up for grabs during Wigan Athletic’s three-match tour of Germany.
Latics take on Fortuna Dusseldorf tomorrow evening in the first match of the trip, before taking on SC Wiedenbruck on Tuesday and then SC Paderborn next Friday.
Tavernier has been Wigan’s stand-out performer during their pre-season programme so far, but he insists no-one can take anything for granted as far as the opening game of the Championship campaign against Reading is concerned.
“We’ve got three games out there and this will be one of the final pushes before the start of the season,” he told the Evening Post.
“Hopefully we can get three really good results out there and come back with plenty of confidence for the Reading game.”
Tavernier has only been a Latics player for a matter of weeks, but he’s already embarking on his second tour of Germany.
And he admits it’s been a big help to him and the other new players in finding their feet.
“It was great to go away to Germany almost as soon as I signed, because it allowed me to get to know the lads from the off,” he added.
“Everyone’s made the new lads feel so welcome, it’s a great set-up here, a great squad and I’m very happy to be here.”
