ANDREW Taylor set himself a target of winning promotion back into the Premier League after becoming Wigan Athletic’s first summer signing.

The 27-year-old yesterday put pen to paper on a three-year deal at the DW from fellow Championship outfit Cardiff.

Taylor helped the Bluebirds win promotion to the top flight two years ago before falling out of favour following the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during last term.

And with Cardiff expected to be one of Wigan’s promotion rivals next season, Taylor will be doing all he can to clip the wings of the Bluebirds.

Taylor, who enjoyed his time in South Wales, hopes the experience of winning promotion to the Premier League will come in handy at his new club.

“We qualified for the play-offs and reached a major cup final in my first season, while we were promoted as champions in my second,” Taylor said.

“That was easily the highlight of my career so far – and I’d love to do that again with Wigan.

“I made 18 Premier League appearances and would love to experience top-flight football again.

“I can certainly see Cardiff bouncing straight back, and my ideal season would be for Wigan to win the title with Cardiff runners-up.

“I’m excited about joining Wigan, who had a terrific run after Uwe Rosler took charge during the season. We’ll start the new season with confidence.”

With Jean Beausejour and Stephen Crainey both out of contract and expected to leave the club, Latics chief Rosler believes Taylor is the ideal man both on and off the field to help lead Latics into next term.

“I’m very happy to get a player of Andrew’s stature and experience to our football club,” said Rosler.

“He’s a leader, someone who can take responsibility on the field.

“He is a very experienced and reliable player who is at the best stage of his career.

“I think that will do us very well as a team in next season’s campaign, especially when we’re bringing in younger players who need experienced players on their side to develop in the best way.”

Partick Thistle’s highly-rated left-back Aaron Taylor-Sinclair is also believed to be on Wigan’s radar, while Rosler has also pledged to bring in attacking reinforcements following the departures of Jordi Gomez and Nick Powell.
