Gary Teale is the latest big-name signing for the Latics Legends ahead of the massive Joseph’s Goal charity clash against Arjan de Zeeuw’s Dutch Masters next Friday.
The ex-Scotland winger has been drafted into the star-studded line-up for the annual showpiece at Ashton Town FC on May 19 (7.30pm).
Teale achieved cult-like status during his six seasons with Latics between 2001-07, helping the club from the third tier into the Premier League. He also played in the 2006 League Cup final against Manchester United.
Still only 38, Teale will give the Latics Legends bundles of energy and enthusiasm down the right-hand side as they look to repeat last year’s 2-0 victory over the Dutch.
The Latics Legends squad is almost complete, with management team Graham Barrow, Peter Atherton and John Doolan – who will also be playing – understood to be considering one final signing.
Already confirmed are the ‘Three Amigos’ – Roberto Martinez, Jesus Seba and Isidro Diaz – who will be back on the same pitch for the first time in two decades.
Latics will be skippered once more by FA Cup-winning captain Emmerson Boyce, with Paul Scharner again jetting in from Austria, alongside Graeme Jones, Nathan Ellington, Stuart Barlow, Nicky Eaden, Graham Lancashire, Jason Jarrett, Michael Brown, Ian Kilford and Kevin Sharp.
De Zeeuw’s Dutch side have also been active in recruitment, securing the services of ex-Ajax star Angelos Charisteas – who scored the winning goal for Greece against Portugal in the final of Euro 204 – as a ‘ringer’.
Also in the Dutch ranks are ex-Manchester City stars Michel Vonk and Kiki Musampa, ex-Sheffield Wednesday ace Gerald Sibon and Rangers old-boy Michael Mols.
Tickets for the big game are on sale via the Wigan Athletic website – www.wiganlatics.co.uk/tickets – by calling 0871 66 33 552, or direct from the DW Stadium.
All proceeds will go to Joseph’s Goal, to fund vital NKH research.
