Uwe Rosler hailed Jordi Gomez for his ‘outstanding’ contribution to Wigan Athletic’s annihilation of Nottingham Forest.
Latics moved into the play-offs with a 4-1 victory at the City Ground - their fifth on the spin and their fourth on the road.
After Martyn Waghorn’s first-half strike was cancelled out by Jamie Paterson, Latics secured the points with two goals in the space of four second-half minutes from Emmerson Boyce and James McArthur.
But the icing on the cake was applied in the last minute by Gomez, whose 35-yard rocket will be a genuine Goal of the Season contender.
The goal capped a superb all-round display from Gomez, who has really come into his own since Uwe Rosler took charge at the start of December.
“Jordi was our top performer, he was outstanding,” acknowledged the Wigan boss (left).
“His goal was fantastic and the highlight of his performance, but the way he controlled the game and worked so hard was superb.
“He closed down, he won battles, made tackles, supplied passes and then he showed his undoubted footballing quality with his goal at the end.
“I’m just so happy for him, and we want to see Jordi Gomez playing like this very often.”
The victory means Latics have now lost only twice in 18 matches heading into Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final at Manchester City.
Callum McManaman and Ivan Ramis, unused substitutes at the weekend, will come into contention for that, with Nick Powell also due to return shortly after a hamstring injury.
