Nick Powell scored the only goal on his 100th Latics appearance to help Wigan defeat Bristol City at the DW Stadium and end the week with six points from six.

Latics temporarily moved to third with their victory, before they eventually dropped down to fifth after the 3pm kick-offs had taken place on Saturday.

Wigan impressed onlookers during their televised clash against Bristol City, with goal-scorer Powell trending on Twitter in the United Kingdom after his sensational performance.

The former Manchester United talisman nodded home his fourth goal of the campaign after meeting Josh Windass’ inch-perfect cross in the 51st minute.

Powell hadn’t scored since notching three goals in each of the opening three Championship games this term, but the 24-year-old combined with new recruit Windass to create a moment of magic in a match that lacked any real clear-cut chances for either side.

After Friday’s home triumph, Paul Cook’s side have now picked up 13 points out of a possible 15 at the DW Stadium this season.

Latics fans were ecstatic to pick up maximum points from their home double header this week and expressed their joy on social media to move to third, even though they knew it was only going to be short-lived until Saturday afternoon.

@WafcSean: “Outstanding result. Proper buzzing, we're (temporarily) 3rd in the Championship and deserve more points than we actually have. Paul Cook is the man. #wafc.”

@JamesSaintLatic: “Best thing about this week is I actually think we’ve been at about 60% performance wise but we’ve gone from a naive team back in August to a team who looks comfortable seeing games out. Superb from Cook. @Chey Dks in particular has stepped up so much at the back #wafc.”

@suzc90: “6 points out of a possible 9 in 6 days who would of thought! Chuffed as a butty! Up them tics #wafc”
