A BELOW-PAR performance from Latics saw them slip to a damaging home defeat to the Cottagers.

There was a sense of inevitability about the opening goal, with Dimitar Berbatov’s cross being headed home emphatically by former Latics hero Hugo Rodallega on the half-hour.

Latics should have been level 15 minutes into the second period, only for substitute Mauro Boselli to somehow stab wide from six yards out.

And it was game over within a couple of minutes when Damien Duff fired past an exposed Ali Al Habsi.

Roberto Martinez did everything he could to spark a comeback, throwing on Ryo Miyaichi and Callum McManaman for the final quarter for Gary Caldwell and Emmerson Boyce.

And McManaman helped to lay on an injury-time response from Arouna Kone.

But it was too little, too late for a Wigan side still looking for their first home win of the season.
