WIGAN Athletic were thumped by Martin O’Neill’s resurgent Sunderland outfit at a rain-lashed DW Stadium.
Despite having the Lions share of possession, as is often the case, the Wigan defence crumbled too easily to hand three points to the Black Cats.
Hugo Rodallega scored Wigan’s only goal to spark a mini fightback at 2-1 but it wasn’t to be as Sunderland turned the screw leaving Latics rooted firmly in the bottom three.
It was a horrendous night, weather wise, at the DW Stadium and despite starting brightly with Ben Watson and Rodallega hitting the post midway through the first half, Latics went in at the break behind from a controversial free kick.
