Wigan Athletic rocked by Grigg/Jacobs setback

Will Grigg and Michael Jacobs have joined Gavin Massey on the long-term injured list with Wigan Athletic's hamstring curse striking again.

Massey is already out until the New Year, and it would be a major surprise to see either Grigg – who pulled up lame on international duty for Northern Ireland – or Jacobs, who has undergone surgery to correct his problem, before 2019.

“It’s a problem for us, because we already had Gavin out, and now we’ve got Michael and Will out,” reported boss Paul Cook.

“I wouldn’t say they’re quite as bad as Gavin’s, but they’re almost. If Massey is an 8/10 (severity), Jacobs is a 7/10 and Grigg is a 6.5/10.

“They’re going to be out for a long period of time, which is very disappointing.”

James Vaughan, Joe Garner and Josh Windass are competing to lead the line against West Brom this weekend, but the absence of Jacobs – on top of Massey’s loss – gives Cook a headache on the flanks.

“Massey and Jacobs have always given the side that balance, and we’ve struggled to rediscover that,” Cook added.

“But over the next few months, we’ve got to find that balance again.

“For me, it’s about licking your wounds and coming back stronger – not licking your wounds and coming out with excuses.”
