Wigan Athletic skipper '˜there on day one' - Cook

His World Cup adventure may only have lasted a fortnight, but Sam Morsy will return to Wigan Athletic as an even better player.

That’s the view of Latics manager Paul Cook, who believes his captain and on-field general can elevate his game to the next level thanks to his incredible experience with Egypt.

“I spoke a couple of times with Sammy while he was over there, and it’s been great to see him out there on the biggest stage, against players like Luis Suarez,” Cook told the Wigan Post.

“First and foremost it’s a great achievement for him on a personal level.

“And for him to be involved in something like this is huge, and that can only help him when he comes back to us.”

Morsy has obviously been given extra time off by his manager to rest and recuperate following an arduous campaign that lasted very nearly 12 months.

But Cook says there’s no question of Morsy not being ready, willing and able to go again come August 4 against Sheffield Wednesday in the big Championship opener.

“If ever a player lives his life to be a footballer it’s Sammy Morsy,” he added.

“He lives and breathes football, wants everything to be done properly, and he’s an example to the rest of the club. He’ll have to give his body a break, like every player has to, and we’ll manage that correctly.

“But Sammy will be there come the first day of the season, don’t you worry about that!”
