Wigan Athletic skipper: We owe fans an apology

Captain Sam Morsy fronted up to deliver an unreserved apology to every single Wigan Athletic supporter following the derby-day drubbing at Preston on Saturday.

And the Egypt international has promised the 4-0 rout hurt the players every bit as much as the fans in attendance at Deepdale.

“We’re so disappointed with what happened,” Morsy told the Wigan Post.

“We had a lot of fans there on the day and we let them down with our performance.

“The goals we conceded were too easy, individually, as a team, not good enough.

“But we’ll grow for sure from this and we’ll come back stronger.

“It hurts me to say it but it looked like they wanted it more than we did on the day.

“That can happen in football, sometimes you just get caught cold.

“What we have to do is make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Latics now have a fortnight to stew on the loss thanks to the international break.

And Morsy says it will take some coming to terms with the setback after Latics had started the campaign in such positive fashion.

“Sometimes in football things happen that you just don’t see coming,” he added.

“All you can do is take it on the chin and come back stronger.

“We’ll stick together and we’ll fight together, because that’s one thing this group is - we’re together.”
