Wigan Athletic are targeting former fan favourites Yanic Wildschut and Callum McManaman to help give them a fighting chance in the Championship next term.
With the Latics squad due back on Monday for the first day of pre-season training, senior club figures are working tirelessly behind the scenes to add more star quality to the group.
And the Wigan Post understands Latics are desperate to put together a season-long loan deal for either Wildschut or McManaman – which would give everyone at the club, on and off the field, a massive boost on the eve of the new term.
McManaman, who came through the ranks at Wigan, was man of the match in the 2013 FA Cup final, before being soldto West Brom for £4.75million in the fire sale of January 2015.
He has since moved to Sunderland, who are reassessing their playing squad having been relegated to League One.
Wildschut was only with Laticsfor 18 months before being sold to Norwich for £7million in January 2017, but spent the second half of last term on loan at Cardiff and is also on big money.
There is no suggestion Latics could afford both players in the post-parachute payment era.
But they would be willing to pay a sizeable chunk of either player’s wages – with Sunderland and Norwich believed to be willing to negotiate.
