SHAUN Maloney is moving to America to join Chicago Fire.

The midfielder is set for an immediate move after the MLS outfit agreed terms with Wigan Athletic.

Scotland international Maloney - out of contract with Latics in the summer - was close to joining Leicester City last week.

Wigan agreed a fee, thought to be in the region of £1m, but personal terms could not be agreed.

Maloney, who came off the bench against Blackburn last Saturday, spent time in America when he was recovering from a hip injury.

With Ben Watson also set to leave for Championship rivals Watford and Callum McManaman on the radar of four Premier League clubs, it further strips away players from their famous 2013 FA Cup Final winning squad.

Since the transfer window opened in January, Latics have let Oriol Riera and James Tavernier go on loan.

Malky Mackay has brought in Liam Ridgewell on a short-term loan from MLS, but has yet to make any permanent signings.
