GARY Caldwell admits he’d love to keep hold of loan star Yanic Wildschut – but insists any attempt to sign the Middlesbrough winger on a permanent basis will be done above his head.
Wildschut has been a revelation since arriving at the DW last month, prompting speculation that Latics will look to retain him beyond his initial loan which expires at the beginning of January.
“We’ve been in touch, but it’s nothing really to do with me now,” revealed Caldwell.
“I’ve stated I want to keep him here, and the club is dealing with that.
“My job is to try to improve Yanic as a footballer.
“As I’ve said from day one, I think he is an excellent talent - but there’s a lot of parts to his game that he can improve on.
“He can help the team a lot more out of possession, he can run better without the ball, he can be more of a threat in front of goal.
“I think he has improved since he’s been at this club, and we’ll try our best to help him improve as much as we can.
“He’s been fantastic since he’s been here, in terms of his performances, in terms of the way he’s approached training and fitted in with the group.
“We want to keep him here and develop his game even more.”
Wildschut has fast-become a fans favourite at the DW Stadium, and Caldwell is not surprised in the slightest.
“He’s exciting,” added the Wigan boss. “When he gets the ball, everyone takes in a sharp intake of breath, wondering what he’s going to do.
“It’s great to watch players like that on the football field.”
