WIGAN Athletic came away with a creditable goalless draw in their maiden European fixture against Zulte Waregem.
Latics nearly got off to the perfect start when James McArthur’s 25-yard strike clipped the outside of the post in only the third minute.
But the home side grew into the game and could have led by the interval.
First, Thorgan Hazard’s cross was flicked against his own crossbar by James McClean.
And then Scott Carson got Latics out of a hole by making a fabulous save from Jens Naessens who seemed a certain scorer at the far post.
The home side largely bossed the second half, but Wigan held on for their point.
Their commitment was summed up when Chris McCann threw himself at a late shot from Ibrahima Conte to help preserve the result.
And they nearly came up with a late winner when James Perch’s shot was clawed away by Sammy Bossut.
