McCann happy to look forward
Chris McCann admits he could get used to his old midfield role after being restored there at the weekend by Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell.
McCann has played most of the campaign in the backline, but went back to his roots for the visit of Southend – and responded with a third goal of the season.
“I wasn’t expecting to go back in midfield after playing wing-back most of the season,” said McCann.
“The gaffer put me back in midfield, he just said to push myself forward, help Will (Grigg) out and get on the end of things, there’s goals to be scored.
“I could have had a hat-trick – one shot hit the post, and I wasn’t expecting the next one to fall for me, but it was nice to see the goal go in.”
Like everyone else connected with Latics, McCann will be keeping a close eye on tonight’s League One clash between Walsall and Shrewsbury, with anything other than a Saddlers win confirming Wigan’s immediate return to the Champonship.
“It’s pretty much done,” he added. “It’s a nice thing to have that cushion.”
