My debt to Wigan Athletic, by Dan Burn

The big centre-back joined Latics in the summer of 2016 on a free transfer when Fulham opted not to offer him a new contract.

After a shaky start to his Wigan career, Burn quickly found his feet and put in a series of consistent performances that saw him named player of the year in his debut season.

Despite his form, Latics were unfortunately relegated from the Championship.

However, Burn played a central role as Latics won the League One title the following season, being named in the PFA team of the year.

As a result, Burn secured a return to the top flight that summer, with Brighton shelling out £4million for his services.

And having proved he more than belongs in the top flight, he says he’ll always remember his Wigan days fondly.

“I’ll always be grateful for the chance Wigan gave me after my release from Fulham,” Burn acknowledged.

“Maybe I was a bit naive thinking I’d have a lot of offers.

“Wigan were the ones that showed interest and took a chance on me.

“I’m glad I managed to repay the faith they had by enjoying some good years there.

“Since that time, I’ve made some really good progress.

“I always knew I had the ability to play at this level, but it was about being consistent and taking my chance.

“I’ll always be thankful to Brighton for giving me that opportunity to be where I am now.”
