New owners asked me where we need to strengthen - Wigan Athletic boss

John Sheridan has already met with Wigan Athletic's prospective new owners - to outline his plans for taking the club forward.

The news Latics fans have been waiting for since July arrived on Wednesday night, with a Spanish bidder having an offer accepted and handing over a 'substantial' deposit.

While the change of ownership process will take some time, Sheridan says no time has been wasted in shaping the future of the club.

"I met them during the week, it was just a brief chat, whether the deal was over the line or not I don't know," the Latics boss admitted.

"All we talked about was what's going on with the football side on the pitch, how we're doing and what we're trying to do, and what I believe we need to be successful in this division.

"As a manager, I try not to get too deep or too involved in the politics side of it.

"There's other people far more qualified than me who can be doing that.

"All I can speak about is the football side, and I believe things are as positive as they can be.

"With the addition of one or two players, I really believe we can push on and try to get out of this division.

"They asked me and I told them what players I feel we needed in which positions to strengthen us.

"Hopefully they can take on board what I was trying to tell them, and it can stand us in good stead for the rest of the season - whoever may be here."

Sheridan has put forward two areas he feels the squad is short with regards to potential incomings.

"I've told them I feel we're in need of another striker, to help Garns (Joe Garner) up there," he said.

"If we could get one over the line that would be great.

"Gavin Massey coming back has been like another new player, Dan Gardner's still short of where he wants to be, but he'll be a good addition.

"In my belief I still think we might need another striker and another midfielder, because I feel we are short in those areas.

"Whether it's me who brings them in or someone else, I just want to try and win as many matches I can while I'm here, and get a good, positive vibe around the place.

"The new owners coming will have their ideas on how to do things, and whatever happens, so be it.

"I try not to worry about stuff like that. For me it's all about the next game, which is Doncaster on Saturday."

Sheridan also denied the mood inside the club had improved since news of the takeover broke - because the spirit had already been hugely upbeat.

"To be honest, I think the players and staff have always had a spring in their step - and that's been full credit to them," he added.

"Even though we've not known for sure what's been going on, a vulnerability while we're in administration, which is natural.

"But we've tried not to think about it too much, we've tried to put all of our focus into the games.

"And I think anyone can see from the games that we have definitely been moving in the right direction.

"As a manager and players, all we are judged on is what happens on the pitch.

"For everything that happens off the pitch, that's up to other people more qualified to take care of that."
