Sam Morsy is 'role model' for everyone at Wigan Athletic, says Paul Cook

The Egypt international has been imperious form of late, and even popped up with the winning goal in last weekend's victory at Championship leaders West Brom.

Cook also made Morsy his captain at previous club Chesterfield, and says the 28-year-old is his perfect on-field lieutenant.

"I think when you look around football clubs, especially at Championship level, the reason the captains are captains is because of something," said the Latics boss.

"Sammy has always been a fantastic role model for our players, how he conducts himself between Monday and Friday to get ready for the game on Saturday is huge.

"He trains hard, he lives his life for football, and he's only ever focused on getting better, which can only rub off on other players.

"I think a lot of modern-day players are guilty of just enjoying being footballers.

"But if you're a footballer, you've got a part to play in the community, in the dressing room, and to act as a role model for the football club.

"Sammy does that perfectly for us."

Morsy has added an extra dimension to his game in recent weeks, getting forward and threatened the opposition goal far more.

"He's not supposed to be in the box," laughed Cook. "I don't allow my central midfielders to get that far forward!

"No, I'm delighted for Sammy, he wants to win desperately, and you can see that with the way he plays."
