In a message to supporters posted on his Twitter account, the Latics chairman thanked Caldwell for ‘working tirelessly’ for the club, and highlighted last season’s achievements under his watch.

Caldwell led Latics to the League One title, and won the division’s manager of the year award on the club’s way back into the Championship, but after a poor start this term he was shown the exit door on Tuesday.

Sharpe’s statement read: “I can’t thank Gary enough for everything, he worked tirelessly and put so much time and effort into the job, he massively helped bring this club back to its feet at such a low point in our history and achieved something special last season.

“I can only wish him all the best in his career and I do believe he will have a very good career in management.

“I’ve loved every second of my job so far up until having to make the decision I made yesterday afternoon. Its the one part of this job I absolutely hate, but ultimately I’m in a position where I have to make these decisions.

“However, I’ve made the decision that I firmly believe is the right one for the football club at this moment in time, and every decision I will ever make as chairman of Wigan Athletic will be for the better of the football club and the fans. Once again, I would like to wish Gary all the best and thank him immensely for everything.”
