Six points in four days delights Cook

Paul Cook poured praise on his players for collecting six points in four days after Latics' 2-0 victory at Bury.

Goals from Nick Powell and Chey Dunkley either side of half-time were the difference on what was a tricky afternoon for promotion-chasing Wigan.

The hosts started really well and controlled the opening stages before Latics got the opener.

Cook said: “I think Bury were the better team for the initial stages, they were causing us no end of problems putting balls in the box.

“But with due respect, with the calibre of players that we have, we have moments in games, the players carry that threat and when we scored that first goal I felt we carried a good threat albeit the game petered out in that second half a bit.

“It was a bit scrappy but we’ve had quite a few games in a short space of time so I’m delighted.”

The victory, coupled with the 3-0 win at Walsall in midweek, means that Latics move back into the automatic promotion places at the expense of Blackburn, who dropped to third after not playing.

Cook’s side would have gone top were it not for Shrewsbury’s 1-0 win at home to AFC Wimbledon.

“Unfortunately it wasn’t the case but there’s a long way to go in that race,” added the manager.

“We’ve caught up two or three games on them both now and we’ve got some good results, big wins for us that have put us in a strong position with a lot of work to be done.”

Latics still have a game in hand to Blackburn and two to Shrewsbury with victories in those sending them back to pole position.

And while Cook isn’t even close to getting carried away, he admits that his tea being in control of their own destiny is a great position to be in.

“It’s all in our hands, for any team when you have it in your own destiny it’s important,” he said.

“We’re not stupid, I’ve seen promotions and successes and failures for everyone but there’s a lot of football to be played. The reaction from last week was can we take points heavy off Walsall and Bury and we’ve got six points, you can’t ask for more than that.”
