Suspected broken leg for Chey Dunkley takes gloss off Wigan Athletic win

Paul Cook understandably wanted to keep his thoughts on Wigan Athletic's 3-0 victory at Reading 'short and sweet' - after seeing centre-back Chey Dunkley rushed to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

The injury to the big man in the closing stages at the Madejski Stadium took all of the gloss off arguably Wigan's best performance of the campaign.

Goals from Kieffer Moore, Jamal Lowe and Michael Jacobs saw Latics move to level on points with fourth-bottom Middlesbrough - who remain out of the drop zone on goal difference - with 11 matches remaining.

But all of Cook's thoughts - and those of his players and staff - were understandably with their stricken colleague, who had only just come on to the field as a late substitute.

"It's a great win, but it's just been tarnished with the injury to Chey at the end," said a visibly upset Cook.

"I'm delighted with the performance of the players, to a man they were magnificent.

"But I'd like to keep this short and sweet because it doesn't look like a good injury for Chey.

"He's gone straight to hospital, and I can't think too much about the game at the moment.

"All of our thoughts are with the big man of course.

"When you work day in, day out with someone like that, such a good lad, it's hard to talk about it.

"Up to that, the night had gone perfectly.

"I just wish we were all travelling back on the coach together, instead of one of us being in the hospital.

"It was probably our best away performance of the season, a clean sheet, a win against a good side.

"But the injury to the big man's just taken all of the shine of it as far as we're concerned.

"He's very, very popular in the dressing room, a real leader at the club.

"And hopefully the outcome is as good as it can be."
