A goal in each half from Teddy Bishop and substitute Gwion Edwards saw off Latics, who played well enough for the most part but failed to muster a single effort on target.

"I thought we played some very good football," assessed Lambert. "I'm very pleased and I'm very happy with the guys.

"We haven't played league football for six months so to be producing some of the football we are is very encouraging.

"The midfield three were excellent. Jon Nolan was outstanding and is getting better.

"At the back we looked solid as well. Willo [James Wilson] came in and did well, as did everyone else as the back."

Bishop's early header was his first goal for six years - which Lambert says he needs to work on.

"He needs to play game after game, but we are pleased with the start he has made this season," Lambert added.

"He has a lovely touch of the ball, and great instinct. The way he plays by driving at the defence from the middle of the pitch is excellent.

"It would be great for him to add more goals."

Bishop himself acknowledged: “Hopefully I can add many more goals to my game.

“The manager said I need to start adding goals to my game and that’s true, I haven’t scored enough.

“I’ve never even scored a header in training! I think I closed my eyes, looked up and it looped into the top corner.

“I think it was important that we won today to set the tone. We’re all delighted but we know we’ve got a lot hard work to come.”
