Fan Chris Marsh messaged Defoe on Twitter, asking him to donate £5,000 to the 'Save our Club' campaign - a grand for each of the five goals he scored for Spurs against Latics in a 9-1 thrashing in 2009.

This afternoon, an anonymous pledge of £5,000 was made to the Crowdfunder appeal.

There is no confirmation this was the ex-England forward but the amount - and the timing - inevitability sparked speculation it was him.

It led to fans congratulating Defoe on social media for his generosity and class - as well as messaging other current and former players to ask them to follow suit!

Marsh, twitter name Elbalson, wrote: "Ere @IAmJermainDefoe. Can I be cheeky and ask you to throw £5000 in here, one for each of those five goals you scored against Latics in the 9-1 defeat at Tottenham? I think it's the least you could do mate."

Wigan Athletic Supporters Club launched the 'Save Our Club' campaign on Wednesday with the hope of raising £500,000, either to part-own the club or act as a safety net in case a buyer doesn't emerge. By this evening, it was nearing on £230,000.
