Burn joined Wigan on a free transfer from Fulham two-years ago with the towering centre-half close to making an century of appearances for the club, and will stay on loan until December 31 after the move.

The defender, 26, is affectionately known by Latics fans as ‘Superman’ having been a standout performer in his two seasons with the club.

To date, Burn has played 97 games in all competitions for Latics and he will get the chance to pass the century mark at the DW Stadium before he moves to the South Coast in January.

Paul Cook said: “It is very difficult to stand in the way of a player who has an opportunity to play in the Premier League at a very good club like Brighton and Dan is very deserving of that chance.

“I am delighted for Dan and equally pleased he will be here until January; he’s got a bit of a knock at the moment which will keep him out for a short period of time but he will continue to be a great asset to us when he returns.”

He won the club’s player-of-the season accolade in his debut season, whilst in his second term at the club he was named in the PFA League One team-of-the year for his efforts in helping Latics claim their second League One title in three-years.

Brighton manager Chris Hughton said:“We are delighted to welcome Dan to the club. He has a wealth of experience from his time with Fulham, Birmingham City and Wigan amongst others.

“He’s an imposing figure and had an excellent season helping Wigan to the League One championship. He also impressed in an excellent FA Cup run to last season’s quarter-finals.

“He’s currently recovering from an injury sustained during pre-season, but he will remain with Wigan. That also benefits both Dan and ourselves as it will enable him to get fully up to speed in terms of fitness before January.”
