Vuckic vows to shoot on sight

HARIS Vuckic has pledged to adopt a more direct approach to his play after a chat with Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell.

The Slovenia international has impressed in recent weeks after a lengthy spell on the sidelines, helping Latics move up to fourth place in League One.

However, Vuckic has, at times, cut a frustrated figure in front of goal, having elected to take an extra touch on a number of occasions rather than opting for an early

strike.

It’s somethcing he is more than aware of – and determined to put right.

“I’ve been delighted with the way it’s going, although you can always do better,” he told the Evening Post.

“I could score more goals, maybe I have to shoot more - I think the crowd would be happier about that!

“But sometimes in football you have only one or two seconds, and you have to make a snap decision.

“Sometimes it’s right, sometimes it’s wrong.

“It’s not always good to over-think or to change your mind at the last

minute.

“The first thing that comes into the mind, sometimes you have to go with that.

“I’m sure that will come with more games and confidence.”

Vuckic, whose solitary goal this term came against Saturday’s opponents Sheffield United, certainly does not lack the quality or technique to add goals to his game - or the belief in his own ability.

“I’m certainly not afraid to shoot,” he insisted.

“But sometimes I just think the pass is a better option.

“I have spoken to the manager about that, and he told me that next time I get a chance to just go for it and

shoot.

“I’ve been working on that, and hopefully it will help me score more goals.

“The fans are always right, and I know how they feel - I understand their frustrations.

“But I feel I’m playing well overall, I made a good pass to help win us a penalty in the last game, and that helps me to stay positive.

“I know what I’m capable of, and only goals are missing at the moment.”
