SHAUN Wane has not been tricked by Brisbane’s decision to travel light for the World Club Series.
Coach Wayne Bennett is only bringing 18 players for the DW Stadium showdown next Saturday.
Wane admits he was “surprised” by the thin squad, which leaves little room to cover for any injuries or illness. But he points to the NRL superstars who were due to fly out today as evidence the Broncos are taking the fixture seriously.
And the presence of Test players Ben Hunt, Sam Thaiday, Corey Parker, Alex Glenn, Justin Hodges and Josh McGuire – plus marquee recruits Anthony Miford and Adam Blair – will ensure he won’t be lulled into a false sense of security. Wane said: “I was a bit surprised by the size of the squad, I thought they may have brought 20 players.
“They are obviously confident everyone is fit and training well for it.
“But what’s more important than how many extra players they bring over, is who is in the squad.
“And when you look at Hodges, Parker, Thaiday, Hunt – they are all top, top players.
“They’ll be putting out their best line-up, and that’s why we need our fans to get behind us and make the DW as intimidating as possible next week.”
Wigan have already sold more than 12,000 tickets for the clash and are predicting a crowd of around 20,000.
The DW ticket office will be selling World Club Series tickets tomorrow night, ahead of the Warriors’ first home game of the Super League season against Huddersfield.
Wane yesterday included Taulima Tautai in his 19-man squad but will wait until after the captain’s run today before deciding whether he plays.
Tautai, an off-season recruit from Wakefield, is nursing a hamstring injury. Connor Farrell is on stand-by to replace him.
Warriors 19-man squad: Clubb, Crosby, L Farrell, C Farrell, Gelling, Hampshire, McIlorum, O’Loughlin, Patrick, Powell, Sutton, Tautai, J Tomkins, L Tomkins, Williams
