We've been in a league of our own, insists Caldwell

Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell believes his League One title winners would have more than held their own in the Championship this term.

Latics finished top of the third tier with an impressive tally of 87 points, regaining their Championship status at the first attempt following the ignominy of relegation last season.

Caldwell says he’s already begun the process of looking at reinforcements ahead of next term, and he will be backed in the transfer market by chairman David Sharpe.

But he feels the Class of 2016 have already proved to be in a league of their own with their impressive promotion-winning campaign.

“I’ve said before that we built a Championship team for League One, albeit it took time to click into place,” acknowledged Caldwell.

“But in the second half of the season, there were games when we looked a league above the opposition, and that’s no disrespect to the other sides in League One.

“I think we were at a level that was above the league, and I feel we can improve even more.”

Caldwell admits he’s already looking forward to next term, and the chance to pit his wits against some massive sides in the Championship.

The Scot took over five games from the end of Wigan’s previous stint in the second tier, but was powerless to prevent the side finishing in the bottom three with the damage already done.

“I think it’s an exciting prospect – for me and also for the players,” he added.

“It’s almost a mini-Premier League, when you look at the teams that are going to be in there next year.

“It’ll be a fantastic challenge, and one the whole club should be looking forward to and looking to embrace.

“We’ve got a big summer coming up, where the club will be active.

“We always have to be looking to improve, in whatever areas we can, and that’s what we’ll be doing again.”
