Wigan Athletic 0 Swansea City 0: How social media reacted

Jay Whittle looks at the social media reaction following Wigan Athletic's goalless draw with Swansea City.

Latics’ extended their unbeaten start to the season at the DW Stadium as they shared the points with Swansea City on Tuesday night.

Wigan made one change from their narrow defeat at Norwich City on Saturday with Darron Gibson coming into the starting line-up to replace skipper Sam Morsy, who picked up a slight hamstring strain in training ahead of the Championship clash. Nick Powell was handed the captain’s armband in Morsy’s absence on his 200th career appearance.

Although neither side was able to make the breakthrough, fans were entertained by the impressive brand of passing football that was on show by both sides.

Swansea City had numerous half-chances to open the scoring, with Barrie McKay coming the closest for the visitors when he was denied from close-range by goalkeeper Christian Walton after Reece James’ superb block to snuff out Oli McBurnie fortunately fell to the winger.

Barrie McKay came close to opening the scoring for the visitors in the first-half when his side-footed volley from close-range was denied by Latics goalkeeper Christian Walton. McKay was provided with the half-chance after Reece James’ superb block to snuff out Oli McBurnie fell fortunately to the winger inside the penalty area.

Substitute Will Grigg had a golden opportunity to win it for the hosts in the 78th minute, but Swansea shot-stopper Kristoffer Nordfeldt made an excellent save from point-blank range to keep his side on level terms at the DW Stadium.

Grigg had yet another chance to pinch all three points for the Latics, but Callum McManaman’s teasing delivery was just inches too high for the Northern Ireland marksman to head home.

At the other end, a string of impressive saves by Walton helped keep the visitors at bay, before Chey Dunkley made a goal-saving interception to thwart McBurnie in the encounter’s dying embers.

Following their stalemate, Wigan Athletic moved up one place to seventh, and joined four other second-tier teams on 17 points.

Paul Cook’s troops are now level on points with sixth placed Swansea and fifth placed Brentford and are just five points away from current league leaders Leeds United.

Wigan are now without a defeat in 13 league games at the DW Stadium, with six of those matches being in the 2018-19 campaign.
