Wigan Athletic 1 Bristol City 0: How social media reacted
Jay Whittle looks at the social media reaction following Wigan Athletic's 1-0 victory over Bristol City on Friday.
Nick Powell scored the only goal on his 100th Latics appearance to help Wigan defeat Bristol City at the DW Stadium and end the week with six points from six.
Latics temporarily moved to third with their victory, before they eventually dropped down to fifth after the 3pm kick-offs had taken place on Saturday.
Wigan impressed onlookers during their televised clash against Bristol City, with goal-scorer Powell trending on Twitter in the United Kingdom after his sensational performance.
The former Manchester United talisman nodded home his fourth goal of the campaign after meeting Josh Windass’ inch-perfect cross in the 51st minute.
Powell hadn’t scored since notching three goals in each of the opening three Championship games this term, but the 24-year-old combined with new recruit Windass to create a moment of magic in a match that lacked any real clear-cut chances for either side.
After Friday’s home triumph, Paul Cook’s side have now picked up 13 points out of a possible 15 at the DW Stadium this season.
Latics fans were ecstatic to pick up maximum points from their home double header this week and expressed their joy on social media to move to third, even though they knew it was only going to be short-lived until Saturday afternoon.
@WafcSean: “Outstanding result. Proper buzzing, we're (temporarily) 3rd in the Championship and deserve more points than we actually have. Paul Cook is the man. #wafc.”
@JamesSaintLatic: “Best thing about this week is I actually think we’ve been at about 60% performance wise but we’ve gone from a naive team back in August to a team who looks comfortable seeing games out. Superb from Cook. @Chey Dks in particular has stepped up so much at the back #wafc.”
@suzc90: “6 points out of a possible 9 in 6 days who would of thought! Chuffed as a butty! Up them tics #wafc”
@SteFromWigan: “Cracking performance and another cracking three points - struggling to believe how you can support anyone but #wafc.”
@KatieRo05315799: “What a good 1-0 win!! Lads played exceptionally well saying we played 3 days ago. All the lads played their part tonight can’t pick out one player expect for Powell’s winner. THIRD IN THE TABLE... for a night #wafc @LaticsOfficial.”
@Laticschief “Again, not the best we've played - but I'd have snapped your hand off at two wins in space of three days. Kipre and Windass were immense. #wafc”
@csdoogz21: “What a great hard fought win that was tonight!!! Every player put a right good shift in tonight and hats off to them all Shoutouts to @WindassJnr and @reecejames69 who were both excellent tonight. Both settling in nicely @LaticsOfficial #wafc #upthetics.”
@MenkFeck: “I personally thought last nights game was a cracker regardless of chances and goal mouth action, real solid performances throughout the team against a strong, fast and physical team. Special mention to the new lad Garner who ran his metaphorical socks off #wafc.”
Latics’ players also took to twitter to voice their delight of winning two league games in the space of three days and to continue to climb up the league table.
Callum McManaman: “Great win the lads.”
Lee Evans: “What a way to bounce back after last weekend! Not our best performance tonight but back to back wins at home and up to 3rd in the league #upthetics.”
Chey Dunkley: “Not the greatest we have played but it was all about the result to make it a good week for us… buzzing for @sammorsy08 for getting a goal midweek and then MOTM yesterday well deserved my friend.”
Josh Windass: “3 very important points . Great header @NPowell25 .. get in.”
Latics chairman, David Sharpe: “Feels good to wake up on a Saturday morning 3rd in the @SkyBetChamp! All the lads dug in and gave everything last night. Enjoy the weekend and get your feet up watching the scores come in!”
Wigan’s incredible start to the Championship season has been noted by rival football fans and national journalists, with Paul Cook’s troops already being dubbed as potential dark horses for the play-offs.
@JakeMoore352: “I know we’re just 9 games into the season, but what a start Wigan Athletic have had. 3rd having accumulated 16 points is a brilliant achievement for team tipped for relegation. Paul Cook deserves huge credit.. #WAFC”
@bcfcmg: “Fair play to #WAFC - much better than us today - showed more heart and more desire. Hard working performance and deserved the win.”
@TonyBarrett: “Some job Paul Cook is doing at Wigan.”
@LewSCFC: “Wigan are going up, aren’t they?”
@JDSWFC: “It’s worrying how well both Wigan and Blackburn have started this season, big shocks on cards.”
@edward_w97: Wigan are the story of the Championship season so far and you can see why. Paul Cook’s side are a well-oiled machine and in Nick Powell they have a very talented creator and goalscorer.”
@HarveyDavies5: “Wigan have been my dark horse from the start of this season and rightly so. Excellent recruitment, fantastic manager who is premier league in the making imo and a style of football that gets results. No doubt they deserve big credit for their rapid progress under Paul Cook. #wafc.”
@RSSport2: “Another big win for Wigan. Still very early in the season but if they can keep this form up they’re surely well in the fight for a play off place. #WAFC.”
