Wigan captain Sam Morsy opened the scoring just hours after his red card against Brentford was rescinded before Josh Windass doubled the lead with his first Latics goal in the 38th minute.

Jarrod Bowen halved the deficit before the interval, but Hull could not find the equaliser and were confined to their fifth league defeat of the season at the DW Stadium.

Latics climbed up five places to seventh after their victory, whilst Hull City dropped down to 18th.

Wigan maintained their impressive form at the DW Stadium this term, with Latics picking up 10 points from their opening four home games.

Wigan fans were vocal on social media in their delight as the club got back to winning ways, even though Paul Cook’s troops made hard work of it.

@Garycar9: “Yyyyeeesss back to winning ways 2.1, same again Friday boys.”

@Joemmtweets: “A top result for @LaticsOfficial tonight. It’s refreshing to see us play smart and ensure points that are for the taking. Jacobs was excellent as usual, and Gibson put in a great shift when he came on: shrewd sub from Cook and co.”

@Dmartw: “That was far more difficult than it needed to be. Still, a win is a win.”

@SteFromWigan: “Excellent, necessary and more than deserved three points.”

@Pieyedder: “Good game that. Just about edged it. Saying that we should’ve been out of sight by half time. Let them back in it. Nearly cost us.”

@GallenLeung: “Great win again. Not the best second half but good to get another home win. Up the tics baby.”

@Billynewton123: “Huge them type of games when you see where you’ve dropped points come April and May. A good solid 3 points and 7th place hope we keep progressing nice and quietly cook is smashing it at the moment.”

@RobboHarry2: “A well-fought and satisfying win tonight, two impressive goals to mark it too! Even taking away the cracking goal, Morsy was phenomenal today - as he usually is. He really is the engine of the team and the way he carries the ball is so proficient.”

@No1fan__: “Don’t make it easy but important to grind out wins when not at our best. Could have been over by half-time and you never really felt Hull offered much threat. But it only takes a slip or dodgy decision to go against you. #wafc.”

@Boolock82: “@reecejames69 head and shoulders above anything else on the park tonight. Terrific performance. Good to the skipper bouncing back too. Up the tics #wafc.”
