Wigan Athletic 2 Hull City 1: How social media reacted
Jay Whittle looks at the social media reaction following Wigan Athletic's 2-1 home victory over Hull City on Tuesday.
Wigan captain Sam Morsy opened the scoring just hours after his red card against Brentford was rescinded before Josh Windass doubled the lead with his first Latics goal in the 38th minute.
Jarrod Bowen halved the deficit before the interval, but Hull could not find the equaliser and were confined to their fifth league defeat of the season at the DW Stadium.
Latics climbed up five places to seventh after their victory, whilst Hull City dropped down to 18th.
Wigan maintained their impressive form at the DW Stadium this term, with Latics picking up 10 points from their opening four home games.
Wigan fans were vocal on social media in their delight as the club got back to winning ways, even though Paul Cook’s troops made hard work of it.
@Garycar9: “Yyyyeeesss back to winning ways 2.1, same again Friday boys.”
@Joemmtweets: “A top result for @LaticsOfficial tonight. It’s refreshing to see us play smart and ensure points that are for the taking. Jacobs was excellent as usual, and Gibson put in a great shift when he came on: shrewd sub from Cook and co.”
@Dmartw: “That was far more difficult than it needed to be. Still, a win is a win.”
@SteFromWigan: “Excellent, necessary and more than deserved three points.”
@Pieyedder: “Good game that. Just about edged it. Saying that we should’ve been out of sight by half time. Let them back in it. Nearly cost us.”
@GallenLeung: “Great win again. Not the best second half but good to get another home win. Up the tics baby.”
@Billynewton123: “Huge them type of games when you see where you’ve dropped points come April and May. A good solid 3 points and 7th place hope we keep progressing nice and quietly cook is smashing it at the moment.”
@RobboHarry2: “A well-fought and satisfying win tonight, two impressive goals to mark it too! Even taking away the cracking goal, Morsy was phenomenal today - as he usually is. He really is the engine of the team and the way he carries the ball is so proficient.”
@No1fan__: “Don’t make it easy but important to grind out wins when not at our best. Could have been over by half-time and you never really felt Hull offered much threat. But it only takes a slip or dodgy decision to go against you. #wafc.”
@deb_chap: “After last night I'm convinced we'll be OK this season, we are holding our own, won't win them all but enough to see us through #wafc.”
Lee Evans: “Was important to bounce back after a disappointing result at the weekend! Another big game coming up Friday night @LaticsOfficial”
Latics fans also highlighted the performances of loan star Reece James and talisman Nick Powell on social media, whilst Josh Windass was congratulated for his first goal in Latics colours against the club where his father Dean achieved legendary status at.
@Nath_cole39: “Buzzing for @WindassJnr, had a great game #wafc”
@tomprescott94: “Reece James is ridiculously good at football, Powell is just Powell, thought Jacobs had a good game as well. Roll on Friday.”
@WafcSean: “Kipre turned it right round second half, top headers at the end. Powell was unplayable at some points too, and Windass off the mark. Plenty to take into Friday, very happy.”
@WiganFanPage: “Reece James is an incredible talent, really hard to believe he’s only 18.”
@Boolock82: “@reecejames69 head and shoulders above anything else on the park tonight. Terrific performance. Good to the skipper bouncing back too. Up the tics #wafc.”
@Caddy1970: “James is a future England player, nailed on… he’s pure class.”
@Sam_Bowmann: “Nick Powell just being Nick Powell again tonight special player.”
@basher5000: “Nick Powell is too good for us .....he sees things other players can’t live with.....and his work rate has gone up 3 levels....Reece James is too good for us too..... great to have them that’s for sure.”
@JamesWhyte8: “Nick Powell is probably best player in the championship #wafc.”
@DannyyTweets: “Reece James will be in the England squad for the World Cup 2022, he will be England's first choice RB, and he will have a worldie of a tournament. For 18 years old he is an immense talent!!! #wafc.”
@Islandhopper74: “Reece James is frightening for a lad of his age the balls into the box are phenomenal #wafc.”
@LeeeHoughton: “How good is Reece James, he’s like Cafu. #wafc”
Latics centre-half, Chey Dunkley: “Justice for @sammorsy08 ..congrats @WindassJnr on his first goal for the club... boys done well thanks for the support... on to the next one...”
