Wigan Athletic academy chief happy with 'sensible decision'

Gregor Rioch says the English Football League's decision to terminate the 2019/20 academy season with immediate effect provides 'clarity to move forwards'.

The EFL administers the programme for Category 3 and 4 Clubs (Under-9 to Under-18), with the Premier League responsible for Category 1 and 2 Clubs (Under-9 to Under-23).

And the decision - which is independent of any discussions regarding the resumption of the 2019/20 campaign for first team football - has been taken to give academy staff and their players an element of clarity at this challenging time.

“The decision gives us clarity to move forwards with our plans for next season," said Rioch, Wigan Athletic's head of academy.

"And for me it is a sensible decision because, in line with the guidance of the government and health authorities, the health and wellbeing of the players, their families and the staff involved has to be the absolute priority.

“The success of our Under-18s has been well-documented throughout the 2019-20 season in both league and cup, and our Under-23s were also in excellent form since the turn of the year.

“We will await the further details on how the outcomes of the season will be decided. It would be nice for our Under-18 players to receive some recognition for their efforts this season, given the lead they had at the top of the table prior to the current social distancing measures being put in place.

“With that said, of course that pales into a form of insignificance given the current challenges we all face.

"And on behalf of everyone at the academy, I would like to pass on my best wishes to our players, staff and their families and to all Wigan Athletic supporters and wish you well during this difficult period.”

The methodology for determining the final league standings or other outcomes for the season will be decided at a future date.

Additionally, it is intended any fixtures for the 2020/21 Academy season will not commence any earlier than would usually be expected.
