The Latics boss swooped for Everton left-back Antonee Robinson, Motherwell centre-back Cedric Kipre and free agent Darron Gibson in a mad few hours, with all three set to make their debuts today.

But he’s nowhere near finished, with days to go before the transfer deadline.

”There will be more players coming in for sure,” Cook revealed. “We need more reinforcements.

“We’re coming up into a very tough league, we all appreciate the challenges ahead, and we need a little bit more help with that. Behind the scenes I’m getting all the help I can be given, which is great.”

At the same time, Latics remain vulnerable to unwanted interest in their own stars – which Cook says he’s powerless to prevent.

“I can only tell our fans – and this is the case with most clubs – that if somebody was to offer the right money for our players, they would leave the club,” the Latics boss added.

“That’s football...Coutinho left Liverpool when they didn’t want to sell him.

“I can sit here and tell everyone that everything’s all right and everything’s going to be great...but it mightn’t be...”
