Wigan Athletic boss returns to old club for goalkeeper

The friendly will be a testimonial for goalkeeper Tommy Lee, who played over 350 games for the Spireites before being forced to retire this summer with a shoulder injury.

As well as playing under Cook and Leam Richardson at Chesterfield, Lee is also a former team-mate of captain Sam Morsy, David Perkins, Jordan Flores and Gary Roberts.

“As soon as the club granted me the testimonial, Paul Cook let it be known he’d do whatever he could to help,” said a grateful Lee.

“And I’m delighted he and Leam have agreed to send a team to play in the match.”

Meanwhile, Will Grigg has been given the green light to spend his summer resting and recuperating after being left out of the Northern Ireland squad for their mini tour across the Atlantic including friendlies against Costa Rica and Panama.

Despite grabbing 26 goals this term, Grigg has again been overlooked by boss Michael O’Neill, the former Latics midfielder.

Grigg still hasn’t played a single minute for his country since gatecrashing the squad for Euro 2016 at the last minute.

On leaving Grigg out of a squad in March, O’Neill admitted the situation was in need of addressing.

“Will Grigg wants to be involved but he wants to concentrate on Wigan and their promotion push,” he said. “ In the summer we will see where he is at.”
