Wigan Athletic chief looking to '˜enjoy' summer for a change!

This time last year, Cook was the toast of Portsmouth after steering the south-coast outfit to the League Two title on the final day of an eventful campaign.

However, within a matter of days – thanks partly to off-field uncertainty over the ongoing takeover of the club – Cook had left Fratton Park in somewhat acrimonious circumstances.

That led to Cook and his management team moving up to Wigan, with whom they once again secured silverware on the final day with the League One title.

And this time Cook’s hoping for a more low-key off-season.

“I don’t think I ever realised how difficult a summer it was going to be last year,” Cook told the Wigan Post.

“It was probably the most unenjoyable summer I can remember.

“After winning the league with Portsmouth, and for it to turn out like that, you’re thinking: ‘How on earth has that happened?’

“For now, at Wigan, and what we’ve achieved, we just want everyone to enjoy it, and be happy.

“I want this summer to be a lot more relaxed than last year, that’s for sure.

“Then we’ll be back to work early, for a job that we all realise how lucky we are to do.

“Being a football manager is an absolute pleasure, when you look around at what some people have to do in their work life.”
