A win against Wimbledon this afternoon, coupled with a failure by Blackburn to win at Charlton, would give Latics their second League One title in the space of three seasons.

“As captain, the aim at the start of the season is to lift the title,” he said. “There’s highs and lows along the way but trophies are what it’s all about and we’re within touching distance.

“From the start of the season, we set out to win promotion and to win the title. So far it’s been a perfect season and it’s gone just how we hoped it would, with the added bonus of the FA Cup run.

“It’s so pleasing to get delighted in emphatic fashion, and we’ve not had to rely on any other teams for favours.

“We’ve hit form at the right time, the pitches are good and suiting our style.”

Having already won promotion under Paul Cook at Chesterfield, it’s a path Morsy is more than familiar with.

“It’s always brilliant to get promoted,” he acknowledged. “The manager here’s got a vision, you can see what he wants to do, and it’s worked.

“He’s created something special here, his record speaks for itself. You just hope he can keep it going.

“The last time we went up, a number of errors were made.

“But the gaffer is very shrewd, he’s got a number of promotions under his belt, he’ll know what to do.”
