Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook not concerned by away form

Paul Cook has reiterated his belief that the gulf between Wigan Athletic's home and away form is of no concern to him.

Wigan’s defeat at struggling Millwall on Tuesday night was their sixth in seven matches on the road.

On the flip side, Latics boast the best home record in the Championship, with 17 points picked up from a possible 21.

But Cook insists there is nothing obvious he will be looking to put right ahead of Saturday’s trip to high-flying Sheffield United.

“If I could put my finger on what was going wrong away from home, we wouldn’t be getting beat every other week, would we?” the Latics boss said.

“But that’s football, and it is what it is.

“Honestly, the away form doesn’t bother me at all.

“It is difficult for us to explain, when we have such a strong home record.

“But our challenge at the beginning of the season was to maintain our status, and that doesn’t change.

“If you’d have split the points we have between home and away everyone would be happy.

“That’s obviously not the case – if the away form was as good as the home form we’d be top of the league!”

Cook once again points to the overall picture as reason to cheer rather than reason to moan.

“Sometimes I think you have to be very careful with clubs like ourselves, who come up from the division below,” he added.

“You can get into a good league position, and then some people can start to get carried away.

“There are no easy games in the Championship, especially away from home, and all you can do is keep going.

“There’s quite a few big teams below us in the table who we’d be quite happy to finish above.

“The most important thing is keep focused on what we’re trying to do, and keep believing in the group.”
