Wigan Athletic players 'will be in demand', admits David Marshall

David Marshall admits it's inevitable 'a few' Wigan Athletic will have their admirers this summer - and may well follow Paul Cook out of the exit door.

Latics will find out on Tuesday afternoon whether their appeal against a 12-point deduction - and relegation to League One - has been successful.

But in the meantime, the hammer-blow of being placed into administration is already being felt, with boss Cook - as well as youngsters Jensen Weir, Alfie Devine, Callum Lang and Dan Gyollai - departing.

And Marshall accepts the next few weeks could be very tough as the administrators attempt to find a new buyer.

"I think unfortunately that was how it was going to go with how well the team had done in the second half of the season," he said.

“The manager was going to be in demand, and a few of the players will be too.

“I haven’t had a chance to speak to the manager, but I’m sure he’s got a lot on his plate.

“It didn’t come as a surprise, it was just sad the way it ended.”

Marshall also revealed his own 'shock' at the way events have unfolded.

“I don’t know the ins and outs of the figures but it’s been a shock to the players and the chief executive," he told talkSPORT.

“The club was never in a position where administration was coming. That was the big thing and we were safe in the Championship for another season.

“There were only three weeks max to go so the timing of it doesn’t really sit right.

“The administrator told us in a meeting on Thursday that usually when they come into a club it’s in a bit of a mess.

“The club usually owes other clubs X amount of money from previous transfers and there’s all sorts of debt racking up.

“But he told us that wasn’t the case at Wigan. We more than deserve to be a Championship club.

“The staff, players and fans deserve it. The staff who have lost their jobs deserve it and hopefully we’ll overturn it and get it back.”
