Wigan Athletic starlets give manager a timely nudge

Two goals from Charlie Jolley and a third from Ollie Crankshaw gave Wigan Athletic's Development Squad a comfortable 3-0 victory over Charlton at Christopher Park.

Jolley, left out of the first-team squad for Tuesday night’s 1-0 home defeat to Peterborough, opened the scoring on 22 minutes after turning in a left-wing cross from Luke Robinson.

The 19-year-old, who scored the fierst two goals of his senior career against Liverpool Under-21s last month, doubled the scoring six minutes later with a cool finish from the edge of the penalty area.

And Crankshaw – who appeared for the first team as a late substitute less than 24 hours earlier – completed the scoring with eight minutes remaining, firing across the goalkeeper into the bottom corner after good work from skipper Alex Perry.

At the other end, Owen Evans had very little to do with his defence doing a good job.

Latics: Evans; Crankshaw, Sanders, Long, Robinson; Adeeko, Perry; Baningime, Joseph, Aasgaard; Jolley.

Subs: Jones, Webber, Lloyd, O'Neill, McHugh.
