Wigan Athletic win was for Chey Dunkley, admits Sam Morsy

Matchwinner Sam Morsy dedicated Wigan Athletic's magnificent victory at Championship leaders West Brom to close pal Chey Dunkley.

Morsy grabbed the only goal at the Hawthorns to give the visitors a third win inside a week, which sees them climb three places to sixth-bottom - three points clear of the drop-zone.

The midweek triumph at Reading was soured by the loss of Dunkley to a broken leg, which will rule him out until next season.

Both Morsy and Dunkley hail from Wolverhampton - ironically West Brom's biggest rivals - and the whole squad warmed up in t-shirts bearing the defender's name and No.22.

And the Latics captain's first thought after the game was for his stricken mate.

“Chey is a massive part of the group,” Morsy said.

“He is one of our top goalscorers this season and he has been brilliant over the last few years.

“It is really unfortunate; but he is with us on this journey, though, and it was nice to show the support with the t-shirts before the game.

“We have to use it as motivation. He is a big part of the squad, not just as a player but on a personal level too.

"He is a great friend of mine, a really popular member of the squad but these things happen.

"It is really, really sad, albeit a lot better than first expected.

"And he will be pushing the standards in his recovery and will inspire the rest of the group to keep working hard.”
