EMMERSON Boyce admitted the ‘incredible’ reception he received on his return to Wigan at the weekend brought a tear to his eye.

The FA Cup-winning skipper was making his first return to the DW since his departure in the summer, and the Wigan fans responded with a standing ovation when he appeared off the Blackpool bench in the second half.

“I didn’t really take it in at the time, and it was only when a friend sent me a video he’d taken that it sunk in,” said Boyce.

“It gave me a really warm feeling – it brought a tear to my eye if I’m honest.

“All the players and the manager were saying in the dressing room afterwards they’d never seen anything like that before.

“For an opposition player, whose team is winning, to be given such a welcome – and to have his name chanted – was amazing.

“It felt like closure for me, to an amazing chapter in my career and my life.

“I didn’t think anything would match the tribute night the fans organised at the end of last season. But this was up there as well.

“The Wigan fans will always be close to my heart and I can’t thank them enoughfor everything they’ve done for me.”

Boyce played the last 15 minutes and helped his side hold on for a vital 1-0 win.

“I didn’t think I was going to get on – and I didn’t want to be an unused sub on my return, he added.

“Then the manager turned to me, and suddenly the adrenaline starts pumping.

“The boys did me proud as well. It was the best we’ve played all season and hopefully it will give us confidence to kick on and move up the league.

“Everything’s been against us this season, but we’ve a great team spirit and we never give up.”
